Paver Patio Installation in the East Bay & Marin

A paver patio is only as good as what sits under it. We dig out, compact and grade every patio so it drains away from your house and stays level through Bay Area winters.

Paver Patios

Built right, start to finish

Most of our patio work starts in a backyard that has a cracked slab, a muddy corner or a slope nobody uses. We remove what's there, set the grade, and build a patio that fits how you actually use the space: a dining area off the kitchen, a fire pit circle, a wide landing at the bottom of the deck stairs.

Interlocking pavers flex instead of cracking, and any single paver can be lifted and reset if a utility line or tree root ever needs attention. With a proper base and edge restraint, a paver patio will outlast a poured slab in the clay soils found across West Contra Costa and the East Bay hills.

What's underneath

What's under your pavers

This is the build-up we use for paver patios. Depths change with soil, slope and use.

You'll never see these layers once the job is done. They're the reason the surface stays flat, drains properly and doesn't need to be redone in five years.

Typical build-up. Depths are adjusted to your soil and use.

Our process

How we build it

  1. Site visit & layout

We measure, check the slope and drainage, and mark the patio shape on the ground with you.

  2. Excavation

We dig 7 to 9 inches for a patio, remove the spoils and treat soft clay spots before any base goes in.

  3. Base & compaction

Class II road base goes in 2-inch lifts, each one compacted with a plate compactor and checked for slope.

  4. Bedding & pavers

A screeded 1-inch sand bed, then the pavers in your pattern, cut clean along every edge.

  5. Edge, joint sand & clean-up

Edge restraint is spiked in, polymeric sand is swept and set, and the site is left clean every day.

FAQ

Paver Patios questions

How long does a paver patio take to install?

Most residential patios between 200 and 600 square feet take 3 to 7 working days, depending on access, demolition and how much grading the yard needs. We give you a schedule with the estimate.

Will weeds grow between the pavers?

Polymeric sand hardens in the joints and blocks most weeds and ants. A light top-up every few years keeps the joints tight.

Can you install pavers over my old concrete slab?

Sometimes, if the slab is sound, drains correctly and the extra height works at your doors. In most cases we recommend removing it so the patio has a proper base and drainage.

Do I need a permit for a patio?

Patios at grade usually don't need a building permit, but rules differ by city and change when walls, drainage or structures are involved. We'll tell you what applies to your address during the estimate.
